The concrete on my front porch surface is flaking off. What can I do to repair this and not have the repairs look tacky?

  • The reason for the flaking is to much water added to the cement mix. This causes a weak surface that oftentimes flakes and becomes quite dusty. There are several paints and epoxies that can be used to finish the porch so it looks good, but you need to deal with the soft surface first. It may require you to wire brush and scrape any loose cement off. Then follow up with a cement leveling compound to fill in the holes and cracks that will show up once its cleaned off. Then simply paint the porch with a good quality epoxy type paint to a color that either blends into other cement or choose a color that complements the rest of the home.

This porch is almost 30 years old...it just started chipping last year.
  • Did you use salt on the porch to clear any ice? That will cause this to happen. Other then that the repair is about the same.

Yes...last winter we used salt. But as soon as the ice was melted, I swept it off...and hosed off the porch. Hmmm...I hadn't thought about that. Thank you...I will give it a "go".
  • Once the salt gets into the cement it does not take to long for it to destroy it. As soon as the salt works it magic, the damage is already done.

Scrape it off and then use a waterproof Render paint!
