Do I have to buy a new toilet or can I just replace the ring?

If the toilet is leaking out from the bottom and the ring has clearly failed in that respect you could definitely try replacing the ring and not the whole toilet.
You can just replace the ring. We just remodeled 2 bathrooms. Kept the toilets. Buy new ring and reset toilet.
What is your project? All you need to do is buy a new wax ring to reseat it in place.

Replacing the ring is simple - just make sure to remove all the old wax from the toilet and the flange in the floor before putting a new ring on.
