First try flushing out anything stuck in trap area with hot water, then follow with at least 1/2 cup baking soda(arm & hammer), Pour in 1/2 cup cider vinegar and cover for a few minutes. Flush again with hot water. Keep strainer in drain to catch any food particles. If odor persists you may have to remove the trap and clean it out.
Pour some baking soda down the drain and let it sit for a few minutes. Follow up with a half cup of vinegar. While that is sitting, boil some water and after about 15 minutes, pour the boiling water down the drain.
I use 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup white vinegar, when the fizzing stops rinse well with hot tap water. Do not use boiling water because it can damage the pipes underneath by loosening the joints.
If you have a agarbage disposal you can use icecubes to scrub the disposal followed by lemon peels, rinse as you are running the disposal.
Remove as much as possible with a snake or drain cleaning tool. Pour ½ cup baking soda then ½ cup white vinegar in the drain and cover, letting sit for 20 minutes. Boil water, remove cover, and pour water down the drain. You may have to repeat the process.
Once a month I toss the spent baking soda boxes from the fridge and freezer into all bathroom and kitchen drains and toilets.
