If I were in your shoes, I'd certainly rent the digger.
dig a trench along the back wall at least four feet wide by four feet deep by the length of the wall. you can use water blocks to fill the trench (milk boxes also work). or you can fill it with large rocks up to one inch from ground level. Place landscape fabric over the large rocks & fill in with gravel.
You can do yourself, but it is a lot of digging. Rent equipment to make it easier. See if these links help.

You can dig a swale, making sure the dirt is piled against the foundation.
Contractor can help but even if you do yourself there is a lot of work and expense. Good luck!
