How to keep a tablecloth in place from slipping off ?

I have a dining room table , that I like to keep covered with a cotton table cloth , but it keeps slipping off , how can I keep it in place ?

Put a heavy glass or wood bowl in the center of the table?
if you have table pads, use them, it does help. I typically have some sort of centerpiece that holds it in place.

If you don't have table pads, I use 4 squares of the 'waffle type' shelf paper about an inch in from the corners of the table.
What about the rubber backed table protectors, these can be cut to the same size as your table.
