Glass shower door will not stay open all the way because of the weight

Question

The glass shower door is 36 inches wide & heavy.  Because of the weight, when the door is opened to exit the shower, it will not stay all the way back.  It closes about midway, and it has to be pushed back constantly to allow for drying with the towel.  I was told by the installer the door is so heavy, that you can't put it in the position you want.  It's annoying to say the least when I am standing on the rug, trying to dry off, and constantly pushing the door back out of my way.  Does anyone have a suggestion so I can do something to make the door stay put in whatever position I want?  Could I add a weight some place that would allow me to do that? Get another opinion. We have a similar glass shower door that stops wherever we put it. I know the installer spent a lot of time making sure it was balanced correctly. He had to come back to make an adjustment but it's been fine since - over a year.

Mine does the same. I just jam a rag or towel in the area to keep it open. Sorry I don't have a better answer even for mine. Tired of thinking about it!

You could easily install a door stop that folds down and then back up when not in use. Get the kind that can be applied like the 3M hooks. Apply it to the inside of the shower door in the folded up position. When you need to open the door and keep it in place, just flip it down with your foot. When you want to closet it, flip it back up. It is on a small hinge so you don't have to worry about breaking it. Did the same thing with my garden shed door. Works great. Hope this helps.

A picture says a thousand words.. I have a few different methods to fix the problem, but without seeing the situation, it would be difficult to assess. does it have a rail across the top? A wall beside it? Otherwise, I would say just drop a towel on the bottom close to the hinge side of the door to prevent it from closing on you..

I had shower doors, they get dirty and are hard to clean. I took mine out and replaced it with a pretty curtain and a heavy duty mildew resistance liner SO MUCH Happier and changing it helps me change the look of the bathroom

Thank you, but we paid 2,000.00 for one glass wall and the glass door, so I would like to keep the door. I do appreciate your suggestion however.

Most doors for things like showers and cabinets have a way to align them so that they close properly. In other words, there is a way to adjust the hinges by a small amount, up, down, left, right, in, out, whatever. That enables the installer to adjust it so that it is flush when closed. You may be able to make an adjustment there, or put in a shim or washer to change how the lower hinge sits. Sometimes that will change the axis that the door rotates ever so slightly and it will change how the door hangs. It's kind of hard to explain. If the top of the door is canted forward when it is *open*, then the door will tend to swing closed, as it is sort of 'facing downhill' at that point. If you can shim the bottom hinge so that it is farther forward, then the door will tend to lean backwards when opened and it will stay open. Doesn't need much shimming, just a tiny bit will do. Any good installer should know that however. Without seeing pictures of the door it's hard to know whether this advice will do any good. 
 Failing that, you could always use a magnet to hold it open somehow, glue a doorstop to the floor and glue a magnet to the doorstop, maybe? If they door is glass or aluminum framed, then you might have to epoxy a small piece of metal to the door so it will stick to the magnet. Don't use stainless steel, it won't stick to magnets. Paint whatever metal you use with several coats of good spraypaint to prevent rust. Instead of epoxy, 3M '5200' Brand caulk/adhesive is great for these types of projects, it's amazing stuff.

Get new hinges. there are hinges out there that are 180 they open out and in .you would need to know the hinge type in the glass to get new ones.. or have who put it in get new hinges.. the best company we use is crlaurance.com

Yeah, I have to say this has the sound of the previous installer being out of his depth. If it always swings to one place, it's telling you which direction it is listing out of plumb. Hinges can fine-tune a door, but they can't haul a heavy door back out of your bathroom area that is hung incorrectly.
