You would need to pull one of the risers off of the steps to see how much space there is... if there is not much... by the time you construct the "drawer" the space could all be gone.... consider going in from the side of the stair to use the space that way.... to see what I mean... check out HGTV.com and check some of the recent Property Brothers episodes... the one I am thinking of they worked on a Condo for a young single gal.
