How about painting them?
I saw a video where after the carpet was removed, the stairs were cleaned and sanded. Then, the stairs were painted a basic solid color. The magic came in when stencils were used to apply a design that ultimately made the stairs look like it was draped with a gorgeous rug! It turned out beautiful!
Actually there's a project posted right here on Hometalk that i thought turned out really nice. https://www.hometalk.com/diy/staircases/great-solution-wood-look-vinyl-tile-on-a-stair-28193187
She used vinyl tile that looks like wood to recover her stairs.
Great Solution: Wood Look Vinyl Tile on a Stair
Hi Cheri, start by ripping the carpet off the stairs. There will be a tack strip on either side of the stairs that holds the carpet tight. Remove those strips and possibly many, many staples and nails. Then you'll know whether you have wood steps or if the are some type of pressed wood. Either way you can paint the steps for now and then if they are not wood, later you could purchase stair treads and add them. Good luck! and could you share your process with us? We'd love to see it.
Remove carpet. Remove staples tacks etc. fill holes, sand the raiser and treads, paint with a porch paint. I paint every other tread...let it dry, paint the rest the next day. That way...you can still use the steps.
Hi Cheri,
I agree with the others that removing the carpet, tack strips and nails, then painting the stairs can look beautiful! I used Hometalk's search feature to find a lot of project for you to enjoy. Some of these may have hardwood - so skip those. Some of the projects that came up are not really stairs. ( I don't know why they came up ) but there are more stair projects below them. Make yourself a cup of coffee, tea or a cold drink and explore all the fabulous ideas from other Hometalk members. :) Good luck finding the one that you love the best! - Linda
