You can paint over tiles with tile and laminate paint. Im not sure how well it holds up in a shower recess but I know it holds up well in the rest of the bathroom. xx
Removing the tile is really best. It gives you a clean slate to work with but also gives you the chance to make sure the walls behind the tile are not rotted or moldy from a previous leak.
You can buy tile paint from your hardware store now to cover them up.
You can also buy self adhesive tile decals now to cover up old tiles. I saw them on Amazon not so long ago.
Rustoleum tub and tile paint kit. Like the decal idea but only on random tiles.
A current trend is painting over the tiles. You can check out a DIY here https://www.pinterest.com/pin/738168195149044302/
Are you wanting to paint the wall tiles or floor tiles or both? I've seen painted wall tiles in a house that was flipped. They used a dark bold color and it looked terrible because the grout was also painted. If you paint it, go with a light neutral color or white so the grout will not look painted so obviously.
