If you use loose pillow batting/stuffing then you can cut the shirt any size or shape that works around the part you want to feature and avoid stains. I have made pillows from collections of T-shirts; you can use whatever you want for the back side -a coordinating print, another shirt logo, or more of the shirt. For a no-sew version, buy a throw pillow smaller than the piece of the shirt you are using, have another coordinating piece of fabric and knot the corners to make a pillow slip.
