How to convert a swinging door to a sliding/barn-style door?
Has anyone converted an existing door to a barn style? I don't want to replace the nicely finished 6 panel door but am tired of having to do the 'two step' to get around the door since it swings into my small bathroom. Barn doors are usually larger than the opening to cover the frame. Converting it to a pocket door would be major construction.

Hi, Theresia, I believe the question is not about converting the existing door as much as, is there enough room on the wall for the barn door to slide on? I think that would be the first determination to be made, then if there is enough room, you could certe go ahead and get it done.

Hi, Converting a swinging door into a sliding barn-style door is very easy, all you have to do is: Remove the door from the opening, remove the hinges from the door and from the frame, remove the knob out of the door and install hardware that will let the door slide past the wall, install the rail on the outside wall and across the top opening of the doorway, install the rollers on the top of the existing door, put the rollers in the rail, put the stoppers on both ends of the rail so the door cannot roll out of it, and then install a latch on the inside of the door and frame to keep the door from being opened when the room is occupied. Good Luck! Personally, I've had to open so many sliding barn doors on our ranch and farm for the last 60 years that I'd never have one in the house. Even though it would be a lot of 'intensive' construction, I'd opt for a pocket door since the bottom of the door cannot be pushed or pulled out away from the wall and they always roll easily in and out.
