Can I soften drop cloth and paint it or dye it for curtains?

  • I haven't dyed drop cloths yet, but I have used them for slipcovers and pillows. To make them soft, I bleach them for a few hours in a tub in the bathtub, stirring it as necessary. As long as they are cotton, they should dye just fine. Use a good quality dye like Jacquard that won't fade with washes.

    Hello Alicia,

If the drop cloth does not have a plastic backing, simply wash it in your washing machine a few times to soften it and remove any sizing. Drop cloths are almost always made from cotton so the fabric will shrink in length quite a bit. That's okay because you want it to shrink BEFORE you make the curtains. I have found that Harbor Freight carries the best selection and has the best prices for all cotton drop cloths.

You can always use Rit Fabric Dye and acrylic fabric paint from your local hobby store. If you want the best quality dye and paint, check out Dharma Trading Company https://www.dharmatrading.com/dyes/index.html
