Anne Knaggs. You could put dirt or Beach sand in unevenly. Then bright green live Moss or Dried moss from craft stores. Pine. Cones, Birch wood branches or other kinds. Many preople are making a fairy like scene. Find items in craft stores. I get lots of ideas from walking around the displays. I've made light weight flowers etc out of craft tin ( used for tin punching) used to do copper but price is crazy high. Collect interesting sea shells, stones and other nature items. Depending if you go with woodsy plan or Beach theme.
How about any type of yard art? Fill the box with sand and stick flags in for patriotic holidays, anything on a stick works well, like pinwheels.
The dollar store is a great place to find seasonal decorations and there is always things on sticks. If you can't find anything there find something you do like and that will make you smile, glue to Popsicle sticks and put those in.
Simple ideas moss sounds good, the different holiday idea is good to. Thank you, anu pther comments are welcom too.
I have a renter that puts vases in the window boxes and puts her "jewels" from the garden tour in. She has even gotten new plant starters! Let cutting sit in the vase of water, don't forget to change water weekly. Looks kinda scrawny at first but it's filled in quite nicely, and looks pretty good!
Hope this helps.
