What is the best way to carve a pumpkin? From the bottom or the top?
From the top. Cut a hole around the stem and use the stem for a handle. Pull up the cut out circle by the stem and use a spoon to scoop the "guts" (seeds and stringy gunk out). Then, carve the eyes, nose and mouth in the side of the pumpkin. Use the handle and the top part you cut out to cover it up.
Growing garlic
Growing our first garlic, should we wait until the leaves are drying out before we pick it? Husband picked first one today along with our first potatoes.
Depends on the garlic variety. Elephant and Italian garlic are planted in the fall, left in the garden over the winter, and are usually good to harvest by May. An old farmer's saying is plant by Columbus Day and harvest by Mother's Day. Good luck.

When do you prune apple trees?
I have a really old apple tree that hasn't been trimmed in years. When is the best time to trim and how do I trim it?
Prune it in late winter, before the spring. I live in Virginia and prune my apple trees in February. They are easier to prune and it is safer to prune them before the sap runs. A little tip: use rubbing alcohol to clean your pruners between trimming each tree. It prevents the spread of diseases.

How can I stop algae from growing in a backyard fountain?
The fountain is a small one that sits in the shade and cats, raccoons and other wildlife drink from it so chlorine is not an option.
I keep an old scrub brush in the garage and scrub my bird bath and fountain about once a week. Running the water frequently should prevent algae build up, too,
Can you plant saplings now?

Yes, you can plant your tree saplings now.
Choose an area that's sunny to partly sunny in your yard. Dig a hole the size or slightly larger than the pot in which the mums are in. Turn the pot on its side and gently tap the sides and bottom to loosen the mums. Grasp by the stem and pull everything, dirt and roots, from the pot. Set the dirt and roots into the hole you dug and push back the soil around the plant. Tap it down with your hands, water, and you're all set.
