Country Design Style-Jeanette on Nov 08, 2015If you have basic woodworking skills to make a wood box you can make a mantel. Think of the mantel as three long boxes. To for the legs and one a bit wider for the top. You can then add basic trims, let it plain or go over the top. Here's my mantel that's over the top. http://countrydesignstyle.com/scrap-wood-mantel/ I've made lots of mantels over the years for clients. Now I enjoy helping others build mantels.Helpful Reply

Charro on Nov 12, 2015I wouldn't do an entire mantel. I would do a thick shelf with thick wooden brackets. You will need to redo the wiring in front so the shelf can be attached.Helpful Reply

Kincaid99 on Nov 14, 2015You can also do a floating mantle with corbels for brackets, one piece of wood is attached to the wall sticking out far enough to slide the mantle box over the wood and attach with screws on bottom and top if you feel would be more secure, some fancy trim and there you have it. Search here on Hometalk, type in floating mantle and there are several tutorials, you can also do the floating mantel with metal anchors.Helpful Reply
