How to make a mantle for my fireplace

My fireplace doesn't have a mantle. I want to make one? Help

  • If you have basic woodworking skills to make a wood box you can make a mantel. Think of the mantel as three long boxes. To for the legs and one a bit wider for the top. You can then add basic trims, let it plain or go over the top.     I wouldn't do an entire mantel. I would do a thick shelf with thick wooden brackets. You will need to redo the wiring in front so the shelf can be attached.

    You can also do a floating mantle with corbels for brackets, one piece of wood is attached to the wall sticking out far enough to slide the mantle box over the wood and attach with screws on bottom and top if you feel would be more secure, some fancy trim and there you have it. Search here on Hometalk, type in floating mantle and there are several tutorials, you can also do the floating mantel with metal anchors.
