Best installation for slate patio?

Question

hi! We salvaged some slate from a torn-out patio that we'd like to create a new patio with. It's irregular in shape, and is 1/2'-1' thick. Is a concrete base the only way to instal this, or could we use a gravel/sand base? The patio planned would be roughly 10' round. Thanks!

This could be set just like basic 'flagstone'. Normally the area is dug out to a depth of about 6-8 inches, then layers of fine gravel are put in and tamped down ( these are called 'lifts' and 2 to 3 are used) fine sand can then be installed and leveled. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/outdoor/patios/having-read-a-recent-post-about-dry-laid-flagstone-versus-pavers-i-wanted-to-share-a-115305

Thanks! We wouldn't have to worry about the freeze/thaw creating issues? I wasn't sure if the slate was too thin for a typical flagstone installation...

Opps I just noticed 1/2' to 1' ...my brain was thinking 1 1/2' which is a typical 'flagstone' type thickness. I better get another cup of coffee. 
 being that thin...it should be set on a concrete pad, slate also like to be sealed well if installed out doors...this helps with 'flaking' due to freeze.
