Velvet on Sep 02, 2016My fireplace looked much like this. We pulled the mantle off and covered it from top to bottom with stacked slate. Now I love it!Helpful Reply

Chelsea @ Making Manzanita on Sep 02, 2016You could do a floating mantle like this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199776933449752... For the sides, maybe some industrial shelving like this - https://www.pinterest.com/pin/199776933449752...Helpful Reply

William on Sep 02, 2016Stacked stone is a great idea. A agree with a floating mantel. Shelving units on both sides of the fireplace with crown molding to give that built in look would be my idea,Helpful Reply

IFortuna on Sep 02, 2016Home Depot and, I think, Lowes have faux stone facings that might look nice. It would probably be easy to convert, just check with someone in that department. Hubby built bookcases on either side of our fireplace and they are filled! I love the idea of a floating mantle. Mantles are such a great decorating tool at Christmas and Thanksgiving time if you are into that. : )Helpful Reply

861650 on Sep 03, 2016How about forgetting what is on each side (for now) and focus on the fireplace and the wall behind it. Do some research on this website. Check out pinterest. I just now googled, "ideas for fireplaces and walls," and found hundreds and hundreds of ideas. Pin and/or copy what catches your eye. Then, take a break. Later, go back through everything you found...maybe several times to get "exactly" what you love. This will save you your sanity, your money and your precious time.Helpful Reply

Cindy Hagemann on Sep 04, 2016Do built-ins next to the fireplace on each side. Paint the wood white, the stone may look good with grey walls.Helpful Reply
