I'm in the UK myself but I have often seen that you can find local people who are giving plants away for cheap or free when they have a surplus. So I think a good place to start would be a classifieds site. Over here I would use Gumtree but maybe in the US you would use Craigslist? Hope that helps!

Thanks Clint I will definitely try it. Not sure why I didn't think of it myself. I use Craigslist on a regular basis for other things.

Also the the classified ads in your local town. Many nurseries are offering plants at a discount this time of year.

There are all kinds of websites for free items or resale. Craigslist, recycler.com, ebay classifieds, offerup, oodle, adoos, backpage, and lots more. Remember please that you should always take someone else with you if you are going to meet up with someone you do not know especially since many times with plants you would be meeting someone at a home. SAFETY FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Deb- Towson MD Friends have told me they've stopped workers who are tearing out seasonal plants and replacing them on median strips, at grocery stores, around communities and asked for the plants. They were going to be trashed anyway.

If your city does median plantings, they often have a giveaway when they redo the areas. Check and see if they also sell their nursery leftovers.

Many plants need dividing in the fall or spring in order for them to thrive. Hosta, daisy,, coneflower, lily, daffodil, etc. perhaps your neighbors would be willing to give you a few when they divide their plants.

We have wholesale nurseries in our area. Many are located under the electric transmission lines. They also grow Christmas trees at some of these places. You may want to check for wholesale places that are open to the public in your area.

I went to Lowes last spring and bought an entire rack of plants for $5. I wound up with about 25 trays of impatiens, marigolds and a couple of other things I can't think of their names at the moment. I also got about 10 hanging baskets of violets. I have a fairly large SUV and I literally filled it up, even the front seat, between the seats, on the floor, the entire back. It was crazy. All for $5. Now, quite a few of the little potted plants were dead or nearly dead, but I still wound up with a huge wheelbarrow full of premium soil. Begonias. I planted about 20 of them, a white and a red, in a huge pot and they're gorgeous, 6 months later. Massive planting of impatiens in the shade, all colors. I planted many at my house, a bunch at my daughter's and at my mom's. A few days before I bought the rack, I was looking at another one, but I didn't think the $5 meant the whole rack. And then I saw a lady taking the whole thing. When I went back a few days or so later there was mine and I had to ask the clerk if it was for real. It was. I mean, I probably got $40 worth of potting soil alone. Timing is everything. But they do always have great racks of discounted plants. I've gotten beautiful olive trees and banana trees there for 1/2 price and now I have 6 olive trees probably 8' tall and bananas on 2 of my probably 12 trees.
