Update on our project. Painted the wood and replaced the ceiling fan. Painted walls with Balanced Beige from Sherman Williams.

That looks really good! I would remove the clock, though. It makes it look like the fireplace is "facing" one direction. If you remove the clock, the fireplace looks open to the whole room.
Also replace the basket with a black metal one.
cheap fix...paint bricks and wood white. The bad contrast of materials used will not be as obvious. More expensive fix...marble tile hearth and a nice shelf/mantel.
I suggest using a small tile on a sheet to tile the brick with a black glossy look. the small tiles are easy to cut off the mess backing if you don't have a tile saw. It's easy to do and great to look at.
I would paint the floor bricks white to go with the top it would look less drastic and you could add corner shelves or mirror tiles for a modern look. and get rid of the clock.
