Any idea what kind of tree/plants?

We took a drive into historic Niagara-on-the-Lake and noticed some unusual street plantings. They are magnificent and although I've seen a trumpet vine, this one is a tree! A passer-by referred to this as plumeria but that didn't seem quite right? I like the way they've used unusual plants as street decor, like this flowering maple (abutilon?). But the one that has us stumped is this tree which was laden with grape-sized fruit. Any ideas?

I think the tree with the fruit on it is a Gingko tree, which is notable for its smelly fruit. The leaves are gorgeous in the fall. The top photo with the trumpet-like flowers is a Brugmansia which is fragrant, but toxic if ingested. I think you're correct about the Abutilon (orange flowers).

The first plant is angel trumpet, 2nd is a gingko (I didn't know they made fruit!), and the 3rd is a hibiscus

the Angel Trumpet is HIGHLY toxic. it blooms at night and is very fragrant. spiny seed pods hold hundreds of seeds. they dry easily. I had beautiful ones in NJ. brought seeds to Fl when moved but I guess it's just too hot here. they gore but then leaves get thick and won't bloom. Great plant.

@Valery The trumpet blooms in FL but it takes consistent water and sometimes the sandy soils don't let it have enough water to bloom. Good luck

Thanks to all of you! It sure seems to be a Gingko tree and a Google search has some interesting facts ... like you don't eat the flesh but the nut inside, protect your hands and a warning that the odor is awful. Angel Trumpet - that name sure fits the shape of the flower! I found some scary info on this one too - apparently it can be very toxic as Valery mentioned above. The other one Abutilon is also known as a flowering maple and is closely related to the hibiscus. I'm learning lots of new things on my cycling trips - it's great being retired. :)

I am proof that the Angel Trumpet is caustic. Some of the seed got mixed in with the greens I planted one year and since the greens were a mixture, I couldn't tell Angel Trumpet was in it. I got really dizzy one night after eating a salad, not knowing the Angel Trumpet was to blame. The next day, I saw one blooming in the lettuce! I knew right away why I was dizzy. By the way, the name is really Datura. I think for me, a better name would be Devil's trumpet!

Yes I read about the hallucinations Datura-Brugsmania can cause. I won't recommend this one for a garden since I don't want curious little fingers picking those flowers.

I think the plant with orange (or coral) colored flowers is what I have pursched as a May Apple. Does anyone have any other thoughts?
  • Yes, Gingko for sure. At zone 5 the maple is treated as an annual here, but perhaps it's ok where you are.

Brugmansia is hallucinogenic. I heard of one gardener who couldn't understand why her brugmansia's leaves were always stripped. Once she discovered that they are hallucinogenic, she thought the neighborhood teens must have been busy. :(

I agree with the first two . The last one looks like a Flowering Maple, Abutilon.

Gingko tree. Don't plant the female which bears the stinky fruit. The Gingko tree has been around since the dinosaurs.

I KNEW it was poisonous, just didn't realize some seed had blown into my lettuce. What I had was Brugmansia because the flower pointed down and Datura flower points up.
