I recently reorganized my sewing "desk" area. Maybe some of my ideas will give you some inspiration: http://www.somuchtomake.com/2016/07/small-space-sewing-room-makeover.html

A search of Hometalk brought up many soutions. http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=declutter%20home%20office
One of the things that simply bugs me is cables from the computer in a hodge podge...not being able to tell which cord goes where. So I use the clips on bread bags. I make a label w/label maker. The labeled clip attaches perfectly on the cord. Generally will not fall off. Simple, cheat and easy.
I bought a basket at Goodwill and then put toilet paper tubes inside to corral like items. Pencils in one, pens in another, sharpies in another, etc. Cheap, easy and doesn't take up much space. Because they are all together it is easy to reach everything and heavy enough that it doesn't tip over.
Chances are, you are beyond help.. Be practical, you won't change your work habits much, but if you can put your clutter to the side, it will help. Side table or storage organizer.. but your desk top?.. beyond help. And you know it!
I made an easy storage container by finding a lazy susan at a thrift store. I saved several can of varying heights. From tuna can on up. wrap with decorative paper and glue down the cans with tallest in the middle and shortest on the outside edge. It works great for string all your odds and ends, pencils, markers etc etc.
I saw on this site how a diyselfer used kleenex boxes she covered on paper and she uses them. I liked idea I'm grabbing any box so I can do the same thing I even saw our packaged oatmeal box and figured great place for envelopes. I don't use table for work just crafting so my table has no drawers and I'm tired of scattered scissors and pens and glue dots and tape scattered about. To much stimulation to focus on project so it makes me uncreative and already have that gene missing from DNA. I'm so knew at this but wonderful site. Good luck!
Thank you! !THat's a great idea!
If you live near an Ikea, look in the kitchen storage section up near the kitchen cabinets. They have a some rails that you can hang hooks on, baskets, and other organizing items. We did this in my daughter's office and it looks nice.
I'm starting to realize that if it looks good/elegant/glam, it is easier to maintain. Hit the $ store for pretty vases/glasses (for pencils etc.) Buy some spray paint and sparkles (if that is your thing). Buy some pretty boxes from HomeGoods, or wrap some recycled boxes in pretty paper (or spray paint). You could also get a few baskets. Spoil yourself with some nice things and you'll want to do it...works for me...slowly but surely. I am inspired by At Home with Nikki , her space is beautiful and organized.
I have several organizing posts that might help you https://chascrazycreations.com/diys/how-tos/organizing/
