DIY Instead of Buy! How I Made A Catalog Item on the Cheap!

My DIY journey began when found Hometalk! It taught me to look at things with a critical eye, and to think of how to make things myself. Not only is it rewarding, it is cost effective to DIY! Here is an example of a project I did.

I've done this many times. I can't believe the prices they list! I like something, I make it. I've even sneaked photos on some of the things Hobby Lobby sells. I also would get magazine pictures from people asking me if I could duplicate something. Mainly furniture that I feel is not only overpriced but cheaply made.

I agree, William - prices are so inflated, that items are still cost-prohibitive, even after coupons are applied! I have been known to snap a photo in Michael's and Homegoods (shhhhhh.....). And yes, furniture is often cheaply made and overpriced. I have not ventured into reupolstering furniture yet - only an ottoman and dining chairs....I have done a secretary desk and buffet - but approaching the family wingback chairs I inherited is another story!

Thanks, Hillela! I find that making something also allows us the freedom to choose colors and mediums as well.

I feel like a spy when in Ross's, Homegoods, Michael's, etc. My phone in my pocket ready to snap pictures at any given moment. It's great to get pictures to assist in painting techniques, special twists on something and so on. Even if I don't make a purchase I leave the store with a smile thinking about the next money saving project waiting to happen! The process is the best part of art. Enjoy the smallest of God's gifts today.

I have a question for you. Do you still have the old secretary desk? I have one pretty similar that I am restoring & I took some of the hardware off to clean & not sure exactly how to get it back on. Can you take me a picture of the inside of yours where the little wood slats pull out. I can’t figure out where that hardware goes back on
