Garlic and marigolds are natural turn offs for wasps. Plant both and also you can hang a garlic bulb near where the wasps build nests to deter them. Spraying with chemicals is toxic to most animals and bad for humans and only deters them until after the next rain.
Wasps are a true dilema here. We have bread fruit trees and large mango trees and these bugs LOVE to nest in them. Therefore, my eaves suffer from their nests too. We have had to resort to doing this! We have a very long bamboo pole that we tie a piece of furniture sponge to...4" by 6" cut from one large piece. We tie it to the pole in the middle and dip it into gasoline. We wave it around the nests and the smell sends them flying. Then we rub the eves with the wet sponge and wipe away the nests too. They can be very dangerous as they can sting more than once and they do not die. But the best thing...is the wasp spray. It has a projectile of close to 20' and I keep a can by the kitchen door and one on the night stand in the bedroom. I have a third just under my couch in the living room and I dare anyone to come into my home uninvited. This chemical can blind and while that is not my intention...an intruder needs to get what he is going to get if he comes in unwanted! Hooray for the wasp spray. (that I don't use on these bugs...it would kill them LOL)
There are organic or natural sprays for wasps made with spearmint. The spearmint is strong and suffocates the wasps. It's best to use this at night when they are inactive. Spray, and walk away for a few minutes. Then the nest can be removed. But I too would love a deterrent.
I use vinegar and have a fan blowing on my patio - they do not like wind. Also grow onions, garlic and chives.
Thanks, as I will not try to kill, but most willingly will try to deter and re direct. I appreciate all of your time and trouble to answer. P.D.
