That's a very pretty idea Hillela linked for you. However, if that's not your style, have you tried searching on home Talk? I just typed in "fences" in the search bar at the top of this page and saw several ideas.
In recent months I've seen posts here about using outdoor twinkle lights for night time entertaining, solar lights, both as the original lights and as made over projects, hanging plants and decorations fastened to fences. Then of course there are stain and paint options.

Depending on how strong your fence is, and how much sun the area gets, you could hang planters on it. There are many types, I've seen rain boots (thrift store buys) painted bright colors and turned into planters, old watering cans, and so many more containers. Have fun with it!
