I had that same gold fireplace, we took it apart & I took it to a local shop that does powder coating because it is hard to get paint to stick to that brassy metal, they charged me $60 & you would not believe the difference that small change made
Its irreversible so make sure. I would find a more interesting way to display your collections. I have floor to ceiling bookcases on both sides, which lets you display your collections more dramatically. You could also paint the back wall behind the bookcases with a pop of color or some interesting wall paper.
If you're using the fireplace, update the fire screen. Try going to an architechural recycler......you might find a fireplace surround, mantel and fire screen you fall in love with.
My thinking is leave the brick alone. Painting is permanent. Once it's done, there's no going back. Instead, change out the brass, paint the mantle and shelving and maybe weed out some of the things you display to give it a cleaner look.
You can paint or white wash the fireplace. Many Hometalkers have done it. As for the fireplace screen, you can easily paint it. Removing it would make painting easier. Lightly sand it to remove the shine and roughen for paint. Use a spray paint made for metal.
Thank you - it was easy to do and brightened up the room and updated it too! I like the mantle simple too with very few items on it. This was the fireplace before I painted it but after I removed the glass doors.
We replaced our old marble mantel & now I would like to repurpose it. The piece measures 8" x 1 1/4" x 6'. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Whitewash the brick, paint the mantle, remove the clutter , paint the gold frame black. I did mine a few months ago and love it!
I went to a motorcycle shop they powder coat all kinds of things. Maybe search your area for "powder coating"
How about a white wash?
