i personally use polycyclic. It gives it the shine and protection you are looking for. I like the water based type. Easier clean up on my brushes.
You can always take them to a glass door and have glass cut for the top of them that will make them very nice looking
Use a poly coat... a couple coats... but make sure it dries completely before touching ... or in between coats. Also make sure the surface you are painting is clean and free from dust etc.

I had a glass cut for mine and loved it. Went to a glass place and told them what it was for and they suggested the thickness I needed, plus they said they had some used glass And turned out it was half the price of a plate glass one.
Mine is antique and still has the quarter inch glass on the dresser, night stand and chest of drawers . I got the set from my grandmother and the surface still looks like new, but I need to redo the drawers and base. I vote for the glass.
