You could paint one wall with chalkboard paint and let the kiddos use that wall to draw and sketch. Or just paint portions of a wall with chalkboard paint. If your kids like to climb, you can look up ways to make one wall into a climbing wall with matting at the bottom. It really depends on what your kids enjoy. You could create stations with themes.
I saw on the tv show Texas flip and move, they made a climbing wall in one of the kids bedroom.

I have seen pictures where the door into the playroom looked like the front door of a house.....was a Dutch door with solid bottom and window in the top.....they had tables and chairs (child size)....lego table....race car track around one wall for race cars....a counter to play store or school...doll beds and buggys....etc.
Id start with fresh paint in a calming neutral color. Maybe a powder blue. One wall being a chalkboard is a good idea too and don't worry about black looking to dark on just the one wall. It won't. Cubby type shelving and baskets or bins would be good for storage.
A chalk wall for creative art. Turn the closet into a puppet theater or reading nook. A teepee is fun. An art center with supplies. A table for artwork and yea parties. Pretend kitchen and supplies. Lots of low shelves with clear storage boxes labeled with pictures of items inside. A rock climbing wall. Ask the kids what the would do for the worlds best playroom. They will have great ideas!
