How did you all learn and perfect your craft?

I learned to do alot by checking out different online sites such as Pinterest, hometalk, etc. But practice is how I've perfected alot of the things I've done. The more you do, the better you'll be.

Do not shy away from trying anything. Craft stores offer classes on many crafts. Major hardware stores offer basic classes on many things. But, I agree with Margaret, practice is the key and don't give up!'

my real craft is crochet although I do many others. I learned to crochet at 9 while in the hospital.

I love to read and I'm old school . The library has books on how to do just about anything and the librarian will be tickled to help you find it. I learned how to make candles (years ago before there was an Internet lol) , how to make soap, bath salts and oils and all kinds of things .

Valerie, nothing is perfect. I got my first ideas from HGTV decorating shows that are no longer being aired. However, I have repainted multiples items many times. Decoupaged pieces and made a mess...let it dry and start over. Pitched many snarky hissy fits and %^&**(&)()^%)%(*& a lot. And let's not talk about cutting a piece of wood (boy did I screw up) so many times. You're supposed to measure twice and cut once. Me? Measure 3 or 4 times and still did not get it right. Best advice I can now give you is when you are at a point of frustration, stop what you're doing and walk away for awhile. Now, you have the internet and can Google anything and watch videos on www.youtube.com.

Trial and error mixed with a bit of common sense. Utube videos, this old house, norm abrams , Pinterest and web sites like these. Talk to local people. Do not be afraid of looking uniformed. Ask questions.

That's grate, you found something you like at 9. Some people never do. I'm a late bloomer In my 50s. I'm just learning some thing about my self. I like to organize and I want to learn to up cycle furniture but I have to find space to cut and paint.

i find ideas online and then practice, practice, practice until I get it right. There has never been anyone crafty in my family so I learned everything on my own and ask lots of questions from some of my crafty friends or Internet Forums.

I think the best advice is to just go for it. There are unlimited resources on line. I recently tackled redoing my kitchen counter grout. Zero experience. I did not want to spend a lot of money on tools that I would only use once so I found a site that gave me some short cuts. I just went for it. It's not perfect but a definate improvement. The scariest part is doing something you've never done before.
