How large is the garden? Are there any plants in there now and if so what are they. What is you location in the South?
I would plant large hosta and cinnamon fern in the back, fronted by astilbe with painted fern in the front.
you are wrong about plant selection!!!!!!!!!!! thousands for the south....succulents in the front, hostas, elephant ears, native grasses, hydrangeas, camellias, azaleas, rhododendrums, bleeding hearts, some day lillies....and the list goes on ...look up your USDA zone number on google and then shade plants for your zone....plant from short in front to tall in back....I suggest pinterest.com-southern shade gardens for ideas...be careful with oleander and rhododendrums---they are deadly if consumed or if they are burned--the smoke is deadly.
Zone 8a. Bed is 10' X 16'
One Hydrangea in front corner.
Hostas spread across the bed, some sort of orange Bloom Lillies across the back of the bed. I just filled in with impatients, Begonias and Coleus. I'm not sure how it will look yet as it is just coming in, but it feels so random.
I have found some beautiful shade plants online, Unfortunately, the nurseries in my area only have the few I mentioned in my reply to other poster.
