Moth balls is the best way. if you have a way to crush them (old food processer etc) they will work best as you can spread it easier,but whole mothballs around the edge of your yard will work.

Colleen is absolutely right. First identify what kind of snake it is. If it is not a poisonous snake, the reason that they are there is because they are finding food. I would venture to guess that if you get rid of the snakes you will be over run with gophers and mice! I have repeatedly found bull snakes that are not poisonous in order to rid my yard of the gophers that have eaten the roots off the plants that I planted within days. My garden was riddled with their tunnels and they cause havoc with it. The snakes have cleaned out the gophers and mice and then disappeared. After years of doing this, I have only one time seen the snake that I put into my yard a second time. I would dearly love to find some more of them. They never seem to go from the back yard to the front yard and vise versa. I would MUCH rather have a non poisonous snake than gophers. Not one snake has caused damage in my yard and I would love to not have the gophers!

Peppermint Oil. Snakes and rodents hate the smell. I soak cotton balls with the oil and toss them wherever I have a problem. Works wonders. Sold by the pint bottle at most Drug stores.
Please DO NOT USE MOTHBALLS! They are toxic to the environment, children, and pets. It would also be using it in a manner inconsistent with labeling, which is illegal.

St. Patrick or a mongoose.
If they are not poisonous let them be. They eat insects and will not hurt you. Or let your dachshund hunt and eat them.
