If you are an artist (or have an artist friend) I have seen some amazing trompe l'oeil. just enter that into your search engine to see some great ideas.
Painting/stenciling is a great idea to lighten the space. Another idea is to add beadboard paneling and cap it with a shelf. You could also add some hooks for coats and bags.
