They really dislike garlic- so you can grow or sprinkle garlic around the garden to keep them out!
cats.
I used cayenne powder to stop them from digging my spring bulbs and the rabbits from eating the young plants as they came up. I have trouble with the squirrels now trying to dig up the coleus and elephant ear bulbs in my half barrel planters. The powder doesn't seem to deter them. As an experiment my hubby put peanut butter on a mouse trap last night and put it in one of the planters. It was sprung this morning with tooth marks on the peanut butter, but no dug up bulbs and no squirrels in sight today! Will see if that helps tonight. If it does, I will put on the other half barrel planter. Out of frustration I put a junk window over it.
I am convinced that squirrels were put on this earth to be the death of me...I hate them. What redeeming value do they have? A rogue squirrel got into my home and did over $1,000 worth of damage not to mention the cost of getting rid of the bugger. A female took up residence in my attic and proceeded to give birth. I would lie in bed and hear her and her offspring scurrying all over the place. Finally, we attached very fine chicken wire to the air vents, and that infuriated the neighborhood squirrel population in that they hissed and spit at me when I would opened my BR window to shoo them away from the vents. So far they haven't gained access again. Hope I haven't spoken too soon.
I have an outdoor cat. He's great, though he sometimes kills birds for fun. He's worth it, though. Those squirrels were trying to pry off aluminum siding to gain access to my roof. I've replaced the same piece of siding twice in just two years. After the last fix I put my cat outside. He was a feral kitten and litter boxes were not his thing. Ever since he's been out there the squirrels avoid my yard. My planters are free from baby trees and my bulbs are all still in place.
Thanks everyone for your comments..have tried everything! Have an indoor cat, Hoa doesn't allow outdoor so squirrels hang on screens nose to nose with her!
