How do I trim my Lilac bush?

Bush is about three feet tall and very "bushy".

I'm not sure of the best way but my Grandma always told me to never trim a branch larger than my wrist.

I trim it in the fall, not the spring.
I trim after blooms fade. They bloom on current years growth so if you wait till spring or fall you will be cutting off the possibility of new flowers.
