Marigolds are good in the sun and heat plus will help the mosquitoes they come in different colors plus cannas daisies azeleas come in different colors
I live in the south and it's definitely hot here! I have great luck with Geraniums, Roses, Daffodils, Lavender and Mums!
Google sun and heat resistant plants suitable to your area. Native plants would be most suitable. Marigolds are hardy in any summer climate.
check with Home Depot, Lowes or paint store...there is a spray paint for ceiling tiles...
nasturtiums are good for hot sunny places, are beautiful.... and you can eat them!

BTW, I'm in zone 9
