What plant are you referring to?
I would wait and see what is going to come back and then trim off the dead part. Let the roots be, if it is starting to show sings of life, the roots are probably in decent shape and it was mostly the plant that was affected.
I'm not sure I understand why you would cut the roots back on a plant, unless it's potted and root-bound? Maybe a little more info needed?
Corn plant,money trees,marginadas,....mostly common potted plants. They're coming back nicely but stunted.
