Hi James! You can use a spray foam as a good option for setting a tub.
When building homes, we put down Sheetrock mud, BUT layer plastic over mud before setting the tub. That allows you to remove the tub in needed in future days for replacement or repairs.
I dont recommend spray foam. You have 2 options: 1. Purchase the recommended form that goes with your tub, or 2. You can use Kubrick's method.
However I just recently did a bathroom gut and we made a 2X4 base. Nailed together to fit the tub. Then used the thick foam board to give the tub the ability to expand and contract properly with use.
Options are many, so use the method you are most comfortable using.
