You you looked at outdoor carpeting, they are not that expensive
We covered our entire lawn with commercial weed barrier then put down gravel and bark mulch. We used railroad ties to divide the areas. You could do a small area with the weed barrier and gravel but be sure to frame it with lumber or lawn edging to keep the gravel from "escaping." A load of gravel here is $38 (we haul) and it covers a nice size area. Good luck!

Check out this site. I have the recycled rubber edging around my flower beds and I say that's the way to go for a patio as well.

I just made a 6x6 surface from flat pavers at Lowes. They were 88Cents each and I painted them with 2 coats of spray paint and a top coat sealer. Cost about 50$
Sorry, it was Home Depot! See picture.
What is super expensive to you? For a nice flat even surface, I would use pavers from any home improvement store or builders supply. Generally at this time of year they are on sale. Sweep in sand, 50 lbs. For $5.00 or so to set them and keep in place. You can always add a rug if you want something soft under your feet.
Re Lowe's and Home Depot... I saw another post telling people to use Lowe's because there is no salesperson around when you need one at Home Depot. In ANY large store like that, use your cell phone to call the store. Tell them you are standing in the store right that minute and you need a staff member in department XYZ. You will have help soon.
