Try painting with chalk paint:)
If they offer no structural support and are only there for decoration or to define separate spaces, I would just remove them. Otherwise paining would go a long way to help them look more modern.
You could take them out. They date your house
You could remove them. They're not structural just decorative. If that's not an option, I would paint them, with either fusion or chalk paint.
Good luck and post pics of your completed project.
we just removed our 14 posts exactly like those and wow, it opened up the whole space. We will be removing the half wall too.
I have the same type of spindles and the issue isn't removing them, it is removing the boards that they are attached to, top and bottom. The top board is adhered to the ceiling and the bottom is attached to the divider. Removing the top board, in particular, would cause a whole new set of issues. I don't want to have to repair the ceiling.
Finally decided!!!
Its getting nice..the room looks much larger..we are going to paint the bottom board white and get the top board out..
I painted mine off-white which made a big difference. I too was afraid to remove them due to the top board, since I have an acoustic tile ceiling. A few years later, once I removed the spindles, and the blocks in between them, there were just a couple of small screws into the ceiling. I removed the board and painted the spot, and you can't even tell it was there. I regretted spending all that time painting them, and it really opened up the space. In may not be as bad as you think.
