How to update fireplace and wall?

I have a fireplace with a hearth and beautiful wood mantel that spans. It spans one whole wall. I want to keep this but how can I update the look without losing the great solid wood mantel. I don't like the idea of painting the bricks white either.
thanks

UnfortunatelY I think paint is a good answer. You could reface the brick with some tiles, maybe marble, it would help to know what your fireplace looks like

I tiled right over the brick on my fire place.

Grey is a good neutral and modern color. I would suggest painting the brick dark grey and the rest of the walls in the room a lighter shade of grey. I know you like your wood mantle, but people are painting their wood mantles dark grey also. Maybe even darker than the brick.
