Totally depends on where you live. I always like to look at what is in commercial landscapes and go from there. Also a locally owned nursery is a good source of advice.
Cactus and other succulents. Also my roses and day lillies like full sun and most decorative grasses like the sun. But why not go to your local nursery and ask them what is best for your area? They will give instructions and often guarantee the plant and you eventually will be buying from them anyway.
Marigolds are very pretty and are durable to all the heat they get.

BTW, I'm in zone 9
