How to make a Wood Gate for my deck?

I want to make a wood gate for my deck should I make the width of the gate a little smaller so it will swing open and close smoothly/easier? If I am to make it a little smaller how much would I subtract from it? It measures 48" wide.

You have to factor your hardware into the equation. Are your hinges flush mount? If not you have to subtract the thickness of them from the 48 inches. What kind of latch will you use and what size? You can leave a gap of a 1/2 inch or so for smooth function and swelling, but have to think about your hardware, as well.

There should be a gap of 1/2" on each side for hinges, latches. and smooth opening. Depending on the construction it will expand and contract with the weather differently.

I agree with William on his answer. We had a big porch on the front of the last house we were in and built a gate across the top of the steps to keep the grand's from falling down the steps when they were little. That was about the gap we used on each side and it worked out great.
