I believe it would be to think a project through, including drawing up or writing down all the supplies you need prior to getting started. Organization and being prepared would be my top 2.
I agree with Debbie but would like to add - Don't skimp on the prep work! It will make or break your efforts.
Think of what you want to accomplish, look online to see if someone else has done the project you have n mind.. they may have some useful tips. Then make your lists.. all the steps you will need and measurements for the finished project and for each part of the project. Be careful to make sure you are accurate . Another list will be tools you need are they in working order, do they need sharpening, do you have drill bits ,etc. Then a list of supplies. List everything including things you may need for protecting other surfaces, and for cleanup Include how many of each thing you need...for example if you will need screws, how many and what kind. Don't try to scrimp- get a few more nails and screws than you think you will need. Take pictures of the before, and of each step. Then block out time for prep and the work and the cleanup.
Go slow! Preparation is always the key to a successful project.
Expect the unexpected, nothing will be seamless regardless of how much you plan. save room in your budget to cover contingencies and recognize that your project will take twice as much time as you think it should....
Start a small tool box that will have things you will use a lot. Pliers, hammer, screw drivers, pencils, tape measure also come in handy around the house for any kind of fix its. If you're into sewing: box would contain pins, scissors, chalk, storage for patterns, thread, needles, bobbins, tape measure. Then when you have your next project check if you have the little things and make a list of what you need like material, bias tape, just the right shade of thread, or nails, screws. Most important when it comes to sizes: Measure twice and cut once.
Plan your work; work your plan. Good tools are always a must.
Some projects will fail horribly . Laugh about it and don't give up .
Prep work is key. Don't skip it. Take your time.
