You have to catch them in the act and then spray them with water from a spray bottle. It truly works in training cats.

The cat does this during the night. Also, squirting him with water doesn't really bother him!

I have the same problem. I keep my TP rolls in a vertical storage holder, but added a liner of a lightweight plastic placemat, so the cats can't claw it. I have used two things to keep them away from the roll on the spindle: One is a commercial TP hanger that has a metal cover that stays on top of the roll ... it's meant as a sanitary device, but it definitely keeps the TP safe.

The second method is in my "guest" bathroom: After I saw on Etsy, I made my own ... it's a fabric cover that falls over the exposed surface of the roll on the spindle. Velcro is used to keep the cover in place; I put extra rows of the Velcro on mine, so that as the roll decreases in size, the slack in the cover can be taken up so the roll stays tightly covered. The point of long-term attachment can be on top or bottom of the spindle, on the wall. If you don't sew, iron-on hemming tape will work well.

do your cats have adequate scratching posts? I know I have about 4 in my house.... the lounge, the door knob hanging one, the chase the ball circular one, and the tall standing cylinder one. To get them to use it, rub some cat nip on it once in awhile.

I have one cat that LOVES TP, either on a roll or in the cupboard under the sink. Decimates them, and has a grand time doing it! Took some wire and made a hook for the cabinet doors, and that took care of those; however, I ended up putting the TP in a basket hooked to the wall with the 3M hooks out of her reach. Problem solved. I would put your paper towels in a cupboard? I have heard that if you put your toilet paper under and not over when it's on the roll, they can't unroll it, and then it's no fun. You also might get the Psssst dispensers to put on the counter for your paper towels at night. They work great!

To Gail in Ga and Clock in Canada - Keeping the door shut might seem to be a simple solution, but with young children in the house, that doesn't work very well

Sorry for chiming in to this thread so late, but I just had to share this in case it helps someone out. I wish I had gotten this advice years ago as a cat owner.

    My best advice?

Give the book " Ultimate Cat Secrets" a read.

It really is the only long-term solution to discipline your cat, OP.

This might come as a surprise to you, but your cat actually wants to obey you.

It’s kitty’s independent, sassy nature that makes you fall in love with him, but it’s this very attitude that makes it frustrating to train fun behaviours into your favourite feline.

Cats respond best to positive reinforcement – yelling, punishing or disciplining your cat just won’t work.

In my opinion, Ultimate Cat Secrets is a must-have for all cat lovers. It's not just a cat training manual – it’s one of the quickest and most comprehensive guides to living with a cat that I’ve ever seen.

The easy access audio format makes it a breeze to digest from your computer or your mobile device and the lessons inside are easy to implement. And if that’s not enough for you, ordering now will score you FIVE great bonuses:

    1) How to toilet train your cat and get rid of that stinky litter box forever.

    2) Extra tips audio program which includes basic first aid and tips on my favourite kitty calming remedy.

    3) Pet medical recorder – an absolute essential for parents of asthma cats or any kitty with a chronic medical condition.

    4) Downloadable transcripts of the entire program and all the bonus materials.

    5) 100 recipes to pamper your feline friend.

    I HIGHLY recommend it.
