Family room wall help

This wall in our family room needs help and I am out of ideas. The TV has to stay as there is nowhere else for it to go. We just moved in a few days ago and this is my first priority! Thanks:)

Maybe the TV just looks a little lonely Some black floating shelves with interesting objects would add more functional, visual interest and fullness. Great space with nice natural light - perhaps you might want to lighten up the wall or update the ceiling fan...just my thoughts. Some of that awesome wood planking would be beautiful to depending on decor style..Good luck and enjoy your new home! Congrats!

are you wanting to keep the color scheme the same? i agree with the above comment, maybe you want a little more light. i think a photo wall or a large vinyl quote would look great. (i would check pinterest for more ideas) good luck

I saw a very cool setup where track double barn style wood doors were mounted on the wall and when they were opened it revealed the wall mounted big screen TV. Very cool looking when the doors were closed. It is like two of the doors pictured below that slide open to reveal the TV. It needs to be mounted further out from the wall for the TV and I believe it even had shelves on them as well.

Congrats on your new home. I would suggest you not get into a really big hurry on this wall. First of all, what is your style? Modern, distressed, traditional or what? There are all sorts of things you can get, redo and re-purpose. I saw an old iron gate that was cleaned up and painted before hanging on a wall! It was stunning. A beautiful palm in that left corner with a pretty, casual chair and thin, long table sitting off to the right. Above that you can place mirrors...even a large one would fit on this wall. Have fun looking for items and don't rush it.

@Jeanette S Thank you:) I'm not sure what my style is. I love to upcycle stuff and make use of old things in a new way. And I do love distressed. Love the old gate idea. You're right about the rushing. I don't want it to look like I just threw a bunch of stuff up there just to fill the space..

I have the same problem, but without a base unit. The walls are different widths on each side as yours, but you have room for a reading space on the left or extra chair that could be pulled out for extra viewing. For mine I'm using a ladder bookshelf on one side and small wood storage boxes hanging on the other. A big ottoman with pillows sits underneath. Colorful items to manage our bright hole in the room. Changing the wall color didn't do much, the TV still stood on it's own and needed surrounding interest. If you have the possibility of changing the color of your base unit I think it would help also. I'd love barn doors as mentioned, but can't happen at my end. And somewhere I saw outdoor shutters used beside a large TV which really softened the area, even non functional ones.

@Creativeme I like the ladder idea.... I may have to steal my husbands ladder and throw some paint on it. I like the idea of something tall and thin there. maybe with a chair beside it. All great ideas. Thanks!

It's a big wall so it needs a big display really, so that it offers a "punch" when someone looks at it. Lots of ideas cheap/expensive for building a wall unit on pinterest. Anything from bookshelves to crates all hooked together. Depends what you like. Have fun with it.

As a beginning, I would paint the wall (if not all of them) a much lighter color. Put the tv in the middle of that wall and temporarily, you could hang one large poster on either side. I would consider putting up shelving on the entire wall. It can be built by someone handy or go to places like Ikea and look around. There are lots of shelving ideas online. Good luck!

Lighter paint is a great idea. A big chunky piece of furniture (possibly a bargain make over) for the tv to sit on or be mounted on the wall above. Built-ins would be beautiful but can be costly. It's a large room so think big!

@Tina yes... TV mounted is on the list. And I'm looking for something large to place under it (an old buffet or upcycled dresser maybe) I'm searching for a good color for paint too. Still no luck with that... Thanks!

We have the same style ceilings in our living room. We started by purchasing a pretty media cabinet that fits with the rest of the furniture. It looks more like a dresser or buffet than a traditional media style furniture. We're planning on hanging a gallery wall around the tv to help it kind of disappear. We'll hang family photos, art prints, and a few other mementos.

DdSomething i did on my large walls with vaulted ceilings i took 1x2s and made square frames, bought fabric i liked and wrapped the frames to make my own art. I change out the frames with the seasons. You could also have photos blown up to engineering size cheap at Staples for around $4 and then wrap the frames of different shape sizes with many different black and white photos. And make a wall collage of black and white personal photos.

I would invest in paint first - even an accent wall would make a huge difference! Brighten things up! I have a whole wall of my granddaughter printed in black and white in my living room, with other groupings of my daughters throughout the house. Recently we had a family portrait taken with all of us, then some smaller groupings. I now feel inspired to re-do our upper hallway, so I have more room for family pictures and paintings I've collected. It is amazing what they can do with a high quality picture - I have a picture (of my granddaughter gazing at the ocean) blown up and wrapped around a canvas frame in my bedroom. It looks like a fine piece of art and I paid about twenty dollars for it to be made.

Floating shelves for family pics

I would do some type of built ins. If this is the family room I would assume you need storage for board games, video games etc. Shelving and cabinets would be beneficial. You could pick a cool complimentary colour to paint the wall and it would "pop" through the shelving.

Great Wall for a hand painted mural around the tv.If you don't want to do it yourself,there are so many cool websites that sell stick on vinyl ideas then embellish it to personalize it.Start with some stencils in metallic paint will help with your confidence.I don't surely like brown but I think it is cool in your room especially adding some metallic paint

@Funnygirl I've seen some tree murals that are pretty cool.... kind of like tree blowing in the wind thing. With the high ceiling I could make the tree really tall. actually sounds pretty cool. Thanks:)

Hi Katy There is a wonderful site I go to for inspiration a lot and it is Houzz. Check out the link I have included http://www.houzz.com/modern-bookshelves I think some Artwork and Bookshelves in white maybe would look great on the walls in your family room. Since the wall is dark, a white or natural wood would brighten everything up better. Then with bookshelves you can personalize the decor and accents to your taste. Do you have A/C? Do you need the ceiling fan? Maybe you can change out the ceiling fan for a hanging light over a side table or coffee table with a dimmer switch? If you search on Houzz you can find lighting and many more ideas. Hope you post pics after you have some work done.

@Kim Dagenais I LOVE Houzz. I've been looking there too. The fan...yes... we have A/C but its Florida and its gets triple digits here. We need it. I hate the fan too. Maybe a better looking one would help out. I love the idea of shelving. Its on my short list of things I would like to do. Thank you!

You could try to brighten up the space. Hang artwork (larger scale) around the unit making the tv less noticeable.

Large dresser to put the TV on. Take out some shelves and put baskets. Tons of storage. then do a gallery wall around the TV.

Fabulous room. Can you mount the tv on the wall higher up and over from the door, without the speakers. I think distance between the tv and whatever you put under it would change the scale of the room so that everything in the room does not appear to be the same height. Putting something on the corner piece would also add height.

Paint the accent wall first! Bright colors ...the teal blue colors are very popular and you could put white selves on each side of it.

I think I'd concentrate more on making an "entertainment place," bringing in artwork or b/w photos of old movie stars and movie stills. Instead of trying to get the tv to blend in, make it the reason for the room--entertainment and relaxation. Put in a game table and leave an open game out, inviting people to sit down and play.

In my opinion the TV wall paint is too dark for the room. If you keep the lighter brown in the rest of the room I would lighten the TV wall in a light beige and add crown molding throughout the room. It comes in prepainted Styrofoam that is easily cut and would bring the whole room together. The new wall color would enhance your furnishings as well.

@Moxie I am toying with the idea of painting that wall a lighter color. oh and how I would LOVE to update that fan (and a lot of other fixtures in the house for that matter) Eventually the fan will come. I think I will start looking for paint... but the shelf Idea is a good one too.
