A cousin of mine also collected lience plates. He used chain to hang them on, made a room devider.

I have a wall where I hung license plates along with pictures of antique buildings. In my half bathroom I made a shelf out of one that hangs from chain links.
Ship lap them into a frame. A long couch piece so they are are moveable.
I think they would be great mounted right above a chair rail in a boy's room! Colorful, a bit of a geography lesson for the little lad, add some framed maps so that he can put it all together. FUN!!!
make bird houses and use the plates for roofs that way you can look out and think of your dad- Or you can buy the bird houses and just add them to the tops.
