What can I do to improve white wood paneled walls?!?

you can paint with odorless Kilz paint, fill in the cracks with compound, and then sponge paint designs or add a chair rail and paint solid above and stripes or other design below. You can do anything once you fill in the cracks between the wood panels and paint with odorless Kilz to cover it. That is what we did, sponge painted with 2 more similar shades (like green/lite green or blue/lite blue in another room. We put border at the top and it looked gorgeous!

if the old walls are still underneath I would do the extra work and remove the white. Otherwise, the only way I know to get rid would be to plaster them and fill in all the recesses.

Due to extra expense, I painted over paneling and it looks great. I did not fill in the lines, because I was afraid it would let go and leave an unpainted spot. Mine has been painted for about four years with no problem. If you would like, I can post a picture later when I am at home. Just let me kno.

Hello Bj Blyth, I think you can paint right over the paneling. I suggest you go to or call your local home improvement store for advice on the type of paint you will need. (Maybe flat, or egg shell) Hope this helps you.

We had a home like this. We filled the cracks with compound between the wood panels then painted all the paneling with odorfree Kilz paint. Then I sponge painted two similar colors on the wall and added a border. To sponge paint leaves a "wallpaper" effect and the border at the top really made the wall look smart. I used a different color for each bedroom and did the same colors for the dining room and front room that joined. If you need have large rooms you can also add chair rounds and do solid above and a design like stripes or sponge painting below. Sponge painting is easy!

Paint the paneling to give it an updated look. Consider whitewashing it for a cottage or beach look, use a bright color to liven up the room, etc. if you don't like the striped areas, fill them in with spackle or joint compound and then sand them smooth before painting.

To me a lovely craftsman home deserves the beautiful plastic walls that enhances the quartersawn oak trim. I would rip it out and skim coat the plaster.
