Baby oil or alcohol should take then off. Good luck!:-)
What colors does he like, start there. Safe colors that can translate in to a future guest room would be navy blue, white, green, yellow, or red. Find some bedding that he likes (stripes are safe) and go from there with the other items such as paint, curtains, pillows, wall art, etc. My suggestion would be to keep the walls neutral (tan or grey) and add accessories for color.
It's his room. Ask him.....Maybe a college decor with the college's colors, or if he's into sports - a sport decor. If he's into computers - something with a computer theme. Ask him what he wants.
Grey is a color that is a great base to build on
As I have know idea what your Sons personality is, or what he likes, I would suggest you take the ideas from Him eg: What is he interested in? Is he a Home Boy or Outgoing. Is he Studious or up for Fun? Would he like A Home Office or a Den? Would he like to make a Statement Bold Colour or prefer to have a Calm Room? What are the colours he likes most? All the above will give you Clues. and if he wants an all purpose room, well that can be done too. Hope that has given you a bit of ammunition for your next chat.......
I like a dove gray - masculine but neutral.
Grey is a wonderful pallet!! Stripes, an accent wall. Or, if You are really brave there are some AMAZING WALLPAPERS available today. Geometric patterns are masculine and can really add punch even if only on one wall. If Your Son participates in the revamp it will be even more sentimental and may bring out His creativity. What are his tastes, does He like Rustic, Industrial, Modern, etc.. He can take pieces with Him when He goes out on His own if the right investments are made......
The best places to find more age appropriate furnishings are: the Restore, Thrift shops, Garage Sales, local Auctions, and sites like Varage sale, and Used.com.. Up cycling and repurposing is budget friendly too and so rewarding when it turns out the way You wanted it to!!
Have a look on Hometalk and Pinterest for amazing redecorating ideas and inspiration, I love all of the above and when I'm stuck they always have ideas!!
Most importantly no matter what You decide remember that prep. is 90 % of the work but when done correctly makes all the difference.
Look forward to seeing Your before and after posts.
Thanks for Your time and energy I hope this was helpful.......
Whatever You decide have fun and remember He is still Your little Boy down deep!!

Best answer; let him choose.
Choose a theme that reflects the interest(s) of your son. My grandson is a film maker and when his room needed to be updated to adult status, his mother had many film posters (scaled down sizes) framed and hung in his room. He also has a tall directors chair and a rug that looks like pixels. If your son is more of a generalist, talk to him about what he would like, what does he want his room to say about him?
Wow - so many great suggestions! Thank you all for taking the time to read and provide your advice. I will make sure to upload before and after pictures!
