I did this to my Mexicola avocado growing so tall, I could not get at the fruit. My local ag representative said, you can do this with almost any fruiting tree. I did, it sprouted more limbs sideways, and I got fruit I could reach.

My granddaddy said never cut the top out of a tree. He never had an avocado tree, but he many other trees and they were all beautiful!
Hello Josie, I always use the old farmer's method when pruning anything: From Spring thru Fall, only prune during months that have an "R" in their name. For example, you can prune in April but not in May. May does not have an R in it. I have used this method for many years and it has always worked for me. Best wishes to you. Good luck.
The tip of any plant or tree is called the apical meristem. If you cut that off a branch or several branches will grow out sideways. The trimmed one doesn't grow back. This is why you trim the tips off of some flowers and plants to make them bushier. It just depends on how you want your tree to look.
When you cut the tops off plants you disturb the auxin in the plant. Auxin is a growth hormone in plants that make it grow. So when the tops are cut off the auxin cannot make the plant grow taller, instead it pushes the growth outward hence the bushy effect.
