I seen what you mean with your entrance needing update being its your frist impression when vistors enter. I would put sub floor down add new floor of your choice, put beadboard walls with with crown white molding Add plank ceiling or soft sponge tiles and over head lighting. A valance with wide slat blind in white and place a bench under the window with storage and two long closets for storing rakes and shovels. On the other wall next to entering the house add a shoe chest to hide shoes and over head mirror with buffet lamp. Place a rug in the center on the floor it adds that home feel. Here are some picture to help with your new entrance make over.
first thing I would suggest would build A Storage bench along The Long wall. You Can Use It For Those Outside Toys Etc Then Add Shelves Above .
Any way you can build a wardrobe to hang the tools inside, make it long but not too deep. Like the idea of a bench to store toys and a couple of trays to the side for shoes. Put up as many shelves as possible and cover the front so it hides all the stuff you don't want visitors to see.
You are so lucky to have this space! Enjoy your new home and here are some really good suggestions:

Thanks! yes, definitely need to hide almost everything in here hey? hmmmm, more planning and home depot trips are in my future. unless i get that bench saw i wanted. i have no way to cut my own lumber/plywood!!
Oh yes, then add a area rug 5x7 or a little bigger than hat can be shaken or when wet, buy two because I live in Niagara Falls and all that wet snow ugh!! Just a thought and I hope you post when your project it done😊
Perhaps you could put the chest on a wall that doesn't have a window. Cover the glass with something that matches the décor to hid whatever you put in there. My grandmother had a very small mudroom as her entrance also and she had benches put in on both sides of the door to the actual entrance of the living room( about six feet) She kept boots there out of season, as well as all the hats, scarves, gloves, etc. in the benches as well as one spot for small gardening tools, etc. that she used at the front of the house. She used a washable rug at the door so everyone had somewhere to put shoes when they came in(no shoes in the house). She put up a few brass hooks on the wall for jackets, etc. of visitors.
The good news is you've got plenty of space with which to work!!! I would look around at mudrooms on Pinterest and get some ideas that interest you. The room has great potential!!!
I would first stain that porch and in through the mud room, and top coat the inside with poly. To insulate a bit, I would put down a checkerboard of carpet tiles maybe with black and brown to match the stain color. https://www.google.com/search?q=picture+of+checkerboard+carpet+tile+floor+in+black+and+brown&client=opera&hs=3Kz&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiC_KLzxenVAhVG-mMKHVjmBgYQ7AkIZg&biw=1366&bih=629

Then I would paint the walls a cheery color.
I would also add the storage bench and a long board with coat hooks on it. Wayfair.com has some reasonable... https://www.wayfair.com/Beachcrest-Home-Ardina-Wood-Storage-Entryway-Bench-BCHH4908.html
If you have no carport or garage, then I would get a tall pantry cupboard to store the tools. You could paint the front with chalkboard paint for messages, and cork the other half for sticky pins ... https://www.wayfair.com/Ameriwood-Home-Kitchen-Pantry-AR1089.html
How about a nice inspirational quote on that wall to the left of the house entrance... https://www.amazon.com/Top-Selling-Decals-Reduced-Available/dp/B011J8MCWK/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1503359779&sr=8-6&keywords=wall+decal+and+inspirational+quotes+and+home+is+where

I don't see a light next to the door, that would be good. solar no wiring needed... https://www.amazon.com/Powered-Security-Backyard-Lighting-SweetHomeLight/dp/B071Z2PVDS/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1503359874&sr=8-10&keywords=solar+outside+lights+with+motion+sensor
You could add a planter box on the porch railing facing the stairs.
And something decorative on the small wall facing the stairs like a welcome sign.
wow i love these!! you're right there is plenty of room. the problem with pintrest i find i find so much i like and get overwhelmed. i think i need to just start with one part and go from there..... thank you!!!!
wow thanks for all the help everyone!! i can't wait to tackle this!!!
i'm kinda on the side bench though right now... fell down the stairs and strained my foot, dislocated my toe (it looked like a 7 lol) and broke it too! oops. i'll post pics as soon as i get back on my feet.
we do have a garage and now that it's painted we can move the tools over, as well as some/all of the toys! there is a light but it's not covered so that'll be done too.
when we get some help moving it, the cabinet will go and all it will hold really are some shoes, hats, wet snow gear and recyclables. hmmmm, will have to hide those somehow. a pantry is a good idea there. as well as the carpeting. i had thought of indoor/outdoor so it can be wet.
