They set buds on old growth in the fall. You trim back only the canes that bloomed that year. If you trim the non-blooming canes you've cut off all nest springs buds.
Ours bloom on last years branches and usually with our cold winters, the branches freeze and so no flowers...This year on our two big bushes we only had 2 blooms....I talked to it (lol) and told it I was giving it one more year before it is gone. Poor thing, it can't help that I put it on the northwest corner of the house.
You should both buy one that blooms on both old and new wood like one on the Endless Summer types, although I did have one of those that still didn't bloom after a bad winter (in Massachusetts). My current one (from a previous owner) doesn't bloom because it was left in the full shade from a greedy gardenia. Hope to move this fall to give it a shot.
I have 4. Two of them bloom many small pom poms. The othe 2 ive waited on for 3 years and finally one of them had 2 large pom poms. My fourth one still hasnt budged. I thought maybe it was being smothered bt my lavendar and rosemary so i trans planted those somewhere elce and i am waiting to see what happens. Fingers crossed!
